Dharamshala is very accessible and placed near the start of many Himalayan trek routes. For families and beginners, we would recommend the selection below of overnight treks. The difficulty level ranges from an easy half-hour walk to reach the Bal Nala campsite to an 8-hour day to reach the Kareri Lake.

Triund Trek - 1N 2D

Triund | Above 14000 ft | Forktail Villa | Camping

Triund is a very popular trekking spot, and has panoramic views of the Dhauladhar mountains on one side and Kangra valley on the other. The trail continues onward to Lahesh Caves and Indrahar Pass. Along the way, there are many small chai shops where one can refresh during the hike. This trek is unavailable during the winter.

Day 01: Forktail Villa - Dharamkot - Triund

Duration: 6 hours

We start early after breakfast. A 40 min drive takes us to the Galu Devi temple - our road-head. The walk is at a moderate incline through mixed old-growth forests of cedar, oak, and rhododendron. The trail gradually opens up to meadows and sweeping views of the Greater Himalayas and the Kangra valley. A last steep ascent brings us to Triund top where we camp for the night.

Day 02: Triund - Forktail Villa

Duration: 4 hours

We spend the morning exploring the meadows and retrace our steps to return to the road-head. You can choose to explore Dharamkot in the later part of the day. Drive back to Forktail Villa. Trip ends!

Kareri Lake Trek 2N 3D

Kareri | Above 14000 ft | Forktail Villa | Sightseeing

One of the best short treks near Dharamshala, the Kareri Lake trek takes you to a  glacial lake at 3000m. The clear waters of the lake are surrounded by meadows, high altitude forests and towering mountains. The Kareri Lake is en route the Minkiani Pass that goes over the Dhauladhar mountains to reach Chamba.

Day 01: Forktail Villa - to Mcleod and trek to Kareri village.

Duration: 30 mins drive and 3-4 hrs trek through beautiful countryside.

We start after breakfast. A short drive from Forktail Villa gets you to the village of Stobary. From here we will trek though some beautiful Oak, Pine and Rhododendron forest to reach the - Kareri Village. Our Plan is to spend the night at a local home stay at the village and experience rural Kangra life at our hosts house.

Day 02: Kareri village to Kareri Lake.

Duration: 5-6 hrs.

We will begin out trek after our breakfast. It is a walk on a gentle, very well marked trail through broad-leafed forest. The forests give way to open grasslands and boulder fields as we walk along the Nyund Nala. There is a Shiv temple and some food shacks along the way. Reach Kareri lake by the early later afternoon and camp nearby.

Day 03: Kareri Lake - Forktail Villa

Duration: 5 hours

We spend a leisurely morning exploring the area around the lake and pack up in the early afternoon. Descend to Kareri village and drive back to Forktail Villa.

Kareri Village trek and Homestay - 1N 2D

A great option for those looking to spend a bit of time away from the town and steep themselves in the culture of the Kangra valley. We stay at a local homestay in Kareri village and take short walks around the village.

Day 01: Forktail Villa - to Mcleod and trek to Kareri village.

Duration: 30 mins drive and 3-4 hrs trek through beautiful countryside.

We start after breakfast. A short drive from Forktail Villa gets you to the village of Stobary. Bal Nulla Camping - Overnight

A short camping trip for people looking to dip their toes into the outdoors or for families with very young or old members who still want to have an outdoor experience. The Bal Nala is a spectacular winter campsite perched on the banks of a gentle stream.

Day 01: We leave Forktail Villa in the early evening. A half hour drive gets us to the road-head. The campsite is a 20 minute walk from the road. Evening tea at the campsite and leave for a walk around the area. We can take a walk to the forest or explore the village and the fields nearby. Come back in time for a bonfire and a delicious local Kangri dinner.

Day 02: Optional early morning walk around the campsite. Leisurely breakfast, and departure. Reach Forktail Villa for lunch.
